These courses are run by our most experienced trainers and include a thorough review of the content of our signature eight-week Mindfulness for Health course for people with chronic pain, long-term health conditions and associated stress. Attending both modules meets the pre-requisite for training as a Breathworks Mindfulness Teacher if you wish to in the future. The modules can be attended in either order.

Introduction to Mindfulness as a Healthcare Intervention

Over the three days of the workshop you will be introduced to:

  • The theory of mindfulness: what it is, definitions, historical context, applications in health-care, the Breathworks approach
  • The theory of: Primary and secondary suffering, the place of acceptance, doing and being modes, the importance of the body as a foundation for mindfulness, brain plasticity
  • The practice of mindfulness: body scan meditation, breathing anchor meditation, 3 minute breathing space, gentle mindful movement
  • Ways you can establish a personal mindfulness practice of your own
  • Ways you can begin to introduce mindfulness into your work with patients or clients*

* Please note that mindfulness is not a theory but a practice, and in order to effectively teach it to others you need to have a firm foundation of practice yourself. For this reason we will be specific about which aspects of mindfulness you may start passing onto patients, though be assured that you will learn some techniques that will be immediately applicable in your work.

Those interested primarily for personal reasons are also very welcome.

  • The theory of mindful compassion: what it is, definitions, historical context, applications in health-care, the Breathworks approach, importance of compassion for self and others 
  • The science of mindful compassion: Three major emotion regulation systems, brain plasticity, importance of oxytocin and vagal tone, stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, overcoming the negativity bias, positivity resonance
  • The practice of mindful compassion: compassionate breath, compassionate acceptance, treasure of pleasure, open heart, connection, activity management and pacing
  • Ways you can establish a personal mindful compassion practice of your own
  • Ways you can begin to introduce mindful compassion into your work with patients or clients*

Research

Research studies on the Breathworks programme have shown significant improvements in the self-management of pain and LTCs sustained for years after taking part in the programme - Long 2016 and Doran 2014.  Mindfulness is increasingly being seen as an important non-pharmacological option for pain relief, that can work either as an alternative or a supplement to medication as outlined in this article in the Journal of the American Medical Assocaition.

Good Practice Guidelines and the UK Network of Mindfulness Teachers

Our training organisation is a founding member of the UK Network of Mindfulness-based Teacher Training Organisations. Our teachers and trainers adhere to the Good Practice Guidelines for Mindfulness Teachers and Trainers, that have become the industry standard for the highest level of good practice. Breathworks' founder Vidyamala Burch gave the keynote address at the health enquiry session of the APPG Mindful Nation UK Report launched in October 2015, Breathworks is featured on the Mindfulness Initiative Website as a recommended training organisation.
