At Breathworks, we’re passionate about helping you to change your life and ease the suffering associated with pain, illness and stress.
We provide courses, products and teacher training in mindfulness-based pain and illness management.
Our mindfulness courses for pain, stress and illness can be accessed through a supportive group near you or through an online course from your work or home.
Breathworks gives people living with pain, stress and illness the potential to improve and transform their quality of life. Our research-tested methods are based on key elements of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and draw on the personal experience of Vidyamala Burch, who has used mindfulness to manage severe chronic spinal pain for over 25 years. We call our approach mindfulness-based pain and illness management (MBPM).
Breathworks provides teacher training in mindfulness-based pain and illness management MBPM and stress management. You can become a certified Breathworks teacher qualified to deliver the specially designed Breathworks courses Mindfulness for Health and Mindfulness for Stress.
Whether you suffer with chronic pain or illness, treat those who suffer, or care for a loved one who does, the Breathworks methods could radically change your life for the better.
Mindfulness is a state of awareness that enables us to make better choices about how we respond to our experiences even in difficult circumstances.
The Breathworks approach to mindfulness is based on accepting our experience of pain, illness or stress and not reacting to it. With mindfulness we can clearly perceive thoughts, physical sensations, emotions and events at the moment they occur without reacting in an automatic or habitual way.
By developing a new relationship with the conditions we find ourselves in, we begin to respond creatively. Experiences don't overwhelm us and we can remain steady through life's ups and downs.
Breathworks was begun by Vidyamala in 2001. She was joined by her friends and colleagues Sona Fricker and Gary Hennessey in 2004 when the Breathworks Community Interest Company (CIC) was formed. Breathworks is rapidly becoming an international leader in the field of mindfulness for pain and illness management and stress reduction.
In 2009 the Breathworks Foundation, a UK registered charity wing was formed. This has aims to promote research and to provide bursaries for people who cannot afford to attend courses.
