What is MBPM?

Mindfulness Based Pain and Illness Management (MBPM)

MBPM is a mindfulness approach developed by Breathworks. It is based on the personal experience of Vidyamala Burch who is uniquely qualified to develop this approach having lived with severe spinal pain since 1976 and having practised mindfulness and meditation since 1985.

Although similar to mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT), Breathworks MBPM has some specific applications for people living with pain and illness. These include a distinctive approach to mindfulness in daily life and mindful movement. Breathworks MBPM also includes compassion and acceptance meditations as part of the core curriculum.

MBPM has also been successfully applied to people suffering from stress. Gary Hennessey, Co-founder and Director of Training at Breathworks, has developed the very popular Mindfulness for Stress course which is held at a number of locations. Our training events also include applying MBPM to stress.
