I first encountered the Breathworks programme around 2004, a year or two after first learning to meditate. My health was getting rapidly worse - I am affected by polio and post-polio syndrome - and mindfulness was the only approach that made any sense in facing the unwanted changes in my life. It still does! The sense of freedom I gained from developing my own mindfulness practice and from following the Breathworks pacing programme inspired me to go on to train as an accredited Breathworks trainer. I did a lot of different jobs before medical retirement in 2008, and have been active in many self-help and community groups over the years. I was a telephone counsellor for six years and have also worked in housing advice, in libraries and with tenants' and residents' associations. I now co-teach Breathworks courses in Manchester and work as a part-time volunteer at the Buddhist Centre there.
