In this online day retreat, Senior Trainer Colette will explore ways that you can bring awareness to unhelpful patterns of reactivity and develop skilful and creative means of response.

Reaction is often swift, a gut reaction that leaves little time to pause, reflect or choose. When we react habitually and automatically the result can be to make challenging situations and relationships more difficult. In this retreat we will practice responding from a place of understanding, kindness, equilibrium and wisdom.

Colette’s spacious and supportive teaching style will guide you in how to step into a space of choice through recognising the difference between reacting (swift and unconscious) and responding (considered and skilful).

A major focus of the day will be exploring awareness, which is at the heart of learning how to respond. Awareness enables the whole process of reaction to be seen, including the difficult sensations and emotions that arise, the sense of aversion or wanting things to be different, the judgement of the situation or the people involved, as well as the behavioural outcomes (to push away, put the record straight, control, correct, escape etc).

When we pay close attention to whatever arises moment to moment, when we allow experience to be as it is we can soften reactivity and allow wisdom and compassion to unfold.

This retreat will have a mixture of meditation and reflective practices.

How to Join

When you book you will be taken to a form to complete. Once completed, we will email you your confirmation and a link to join the event via the platform Zoom. How to Prepare for an Online Retreat?

Here are some ways you set yourself up for a retreat at home: 

  • Wear loose and comfy clothing.
  • Find a quiet space in your home where you can practice undisturbed. Make yourself comfortable with cushions and blankets close by should you need them.
  • If possible, unplug from as many digital distractions as possible (this helps to create a sense of being on retreat).
  • Keep hydrated throughout the retreat. 
  • If possible, prepare your meals beforehand so that you can relax in the break periods.

About Colette

Colette trained with Vidyamala Burch in 2009 and is a senior Breathworks trainer. She has delivered mindfulness-based training since 2011 and plays a significant role in delivering Breathworks teacher training across Europe.

Colette trained to teach Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) at the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice, Bangor University. She has been a Certified Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) teacher and supervisor since 2014.

Colette has run a successful mindfulness-based business since 2012 delivering private meditation courses and retreats in the UK and Europe. Her practice and style of teaching is strongly influenced by insight meditation approaches.

Colette is a member of the Mindfulness and Social Change Network coordinating team. She has been delivering equality, diversity and inclusion training since 2018, specialising in exploring how privilege and social class maintain inequality. Colette trained as a facilitator of ‘The Work That Reconnects,’ Deep Ecology in 2009 and is a trained therapist.

Breathworks is a charitable organisation with a mission to make the benefits of mindfulness accessible to everyone. To help remove barriers for people in financial hardship, we offer a limited number of concessionary and bursary places on events and courses. We operate our booking system on the basis of self-assessment and trust. Please have a careful read of our eligibility guide below, and contact us if you have any further questions.

Concessionary Rate: applies to individuals with an income of less than £18,500 a year (or less than £24,000 if you live in London). 

Bursary Rate: a limited number of bursary places are reserved for individuals with significant financial barriers that limits them from affording the Concessionary Rate.
