Mindful Compassion Training for Healthcare Professionals

Compassion Training Mindful compassion course quote
Compassion and self-compassion practices are becoming more widely recommended to patients in many fields of physical and psychological healthcare. Yet, facing huge work stress and increasing burnout rates, it is often those healthcare professionals with a foundation in these techniques of kindness and resilience who stand to gain the most.

Techniques that Work
The mindful compassion practices which we teach have been shown in many studies to greatly improve concentration, calm under stress, successful interpersonal communication, and work satisfaction. New research has revealed that compassion is one of the strongest components of resilience.

This is doubly important for those working in healthcare, where empathy burnout is commonplace. One of the things this course will cover is the essential difference between empathy and compassion.

For You, For Your Clients and Patients
Breathworks offers a 3-day course, specifically tailored for Healthcare Professionals, and run by our most experienced trainers, specifically to teach you the theory and practice of compassion practice in a way that really makes a difference.

Our courses also contain guidance on how you can start to share mindfulness, compassion, and self-compassion with patients or clients, including a thorough review of the content of our signature eight-week Mindfulness for Health course, for people with chronic pain, long-term health conditions and associated stress.

Who Is This Course For?
People from many fields have benefited, professionally and personally, from this course. These have included MBCT and MBSR teachers, doctors, nurses, counsellors, psychotherapists, care workers, physiotherapists, and anybody who works with others in a caring capacity and who wishes to explore these skills. If you think that you would benefit from this training, we warmly invite you to apply.

Introduction to Mindful Compassion as a Healthcare Intervention

  •  The Theory: what is mindful compassion? History of compassion, applications in health-care, and the Breathworks approach.

  • The Psychological Science: three major emotion regulation systems, brain plasticity and compassion, neurology & neurotransmitters, the vagal nerve, and the attentional negativity bias and how to overcome it.

  • The Practice: compassionate breath, compassionate acceptance, the treasure of pleasure meditation, the open heart meditation, the connection meditation, activity management and pacing.

  • What's the best way to establish your own compassion practice?

  • How can you can begin to introduce mindful compassion into your work with patients or clients?*

*Please note that these practices are indeed practices, not just theories, and in order to effectively teach them to others you need to have a firm foundation of practice yourself. For this reason we will be specific about which aspects you may start passing onto patients, though be assured that you will learn some techniques that will be immediately applicable in your work.

Testimonials

"Very good balance of practice and discussion."

"Excellent - plenty of professional advice given, but also time to discuss personal experience."

"I feel that I've learned enough about mindfulness as a health-care intervention and the appropriate skills to develop interventions in my work."

"Content was excellent and I feel able to apply this to my work following completing some meditation."

"Karen's love for teaching shone through. She was patient and understanding with all of us. As a healthcare professional working in the NHS I had started to lose my compassion for others around me as well as myself, and the 3 days have helped me see that, and during the past month I have noticed a difference in the way I respond to myself and others."

"Presentations were very well organised, educational, and nurturing."

"It's impressive to have kept my interest non-stop for 3 days. That hasn't always happened on previous mindfulness courses!"

"Excellent! So engaging, thought-provoking, relevant."
