Vidyamala, Sona and Karen invite you to join them in exploring how we can work with our minds and hearts to move towards greater expansiveness, love and freedom.

There are many models for this journey from wisdom traditions and they will draw on some of these over the retreat – applying ancient wisdom to our minds in the modern world.

They will introduce an ‘energetic arc’ of awakening which includes becoming more mindful and present; getting to know experience; learning to release tight and contracted states; and opening to increasing levels of bliss, absorption and equanimity.

They will also introduce ways to work with all the habits and tendencies which prevent this kind of opening. This includes mental and emotional states such as: anxiety and restlessness; a dull mind and body; getting caught in loops of craving and ill-will; and doubt in the benefits of mindfulness practice.

There will also be a Q & A session.

This retreat will be held in a hybrid format, with options to join In-Person or Online, as well as for the full week or just the weekend, enabling as many people to join as possible.

What will you gain?

  • Ways to work with habits that hinder deepening awareness
  • Ways to release the mind into ever more expansive and liberating awareness
  • A chance to meet in a small group everyday for shared mentoring
  • An opportunity for sustained practice in a retreat context

Who is this event for?

Open to anyone who has meditated for at least 6 months

Meet the Retreat Leaders

Vidyamala Burch

Vidyamala is a mindfulness and compassion teacher, coach, award-winning author and Co-founder of Breathworks.

Vidyamala began teaching her mindfulness approach for managing pain and illness following her own personal experience living with health challenges. At age 23, she sustained spinal injuries that required multiple surgeries and left her with partial paraplegia and chronic pain. She began to explore mindfulness and meditation as a way to manage her pain and found the results to be life changing and transformative.

In 2004, she developed the world’s first Mindfulness-based Pain Management (MBPM) programme with friends and fellow meditation teachers Sona Fricker and Gary Hennessey. Today, Breathworks has taught over 100,000 people their mindfulness-approach to coping with pain, illness and stress.

Vidyamala is the author of Living Well with Pain and Illness (2008), Mindfulness for Health (2013), and Mindfulness for Women (2016). Mindfulness for Health was awarded first prize in Popular Medicine in the British Medical Association Books Awards in 2014, and was named the best self-help book in its category by health professionals in the UK’s Reading Well Scheme.

The British Pain Society awarded Vidyamala an honorary membership for her contribution to the field of pain management in 2018, and the Shaw Trust’s Power List has named her as one of the most influential disabled people in the UK for three years running.

Sona Fricker

Sona started practising hatha yoga in his early twenties, and then took up meditation at a Buddhist centre in North London. That was back in the early 1970s. Soon after, he was ordained into the Western Buddhist Order, now the Triratna Buddhist Order.

For the subsequent forty odd years he has devoted his life to practising and teaching mindfulness, meditation and Buddhist philosophy around the world. He was involved in the establishment and running of several public centres, including in Stockholm, Sweden, and worked as director of a retreat centre in the UK, where he spent much time leading and attending intensive retreats. He has led retreats and training programmes in the UK, Germany, Holland, Sweden, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

Following a powerful experience on a retreat some years ago, he has responded to a growing urge to devote more of his life to caring for people who suffer from pain and illness. At that time he had developed a close friendship with Vidyamala and was inspired by the work she was doing teaching mindfulness-based techniques to manage long-term health conditions. He trained with Vidyamala in the Breathworks Programme back in 2003 and is a co-founder of the Breathworks organisation.
