🙋‍♀ Suitable For: All experience levels, including those new to mindfulness

Overview

Vidyamala Burch, founder of Breathworks, is joined by writer and comedian Miranda Hart for an honest, often funny, conversation on creating a good life with chronic illness. Together they talk about surrender, grief, play and self-compassion, drawing on both their own decades-long journeys with pain and ill health. Includes a guided meditation and live Q&A.

What You'll Gain

  • Acceptance versus resignation: a clear distinction between the two, and why surrender can be an act of courage rather than defeat

  • The hidden difficulty of diagnosis: Miranda on the surprising difficulty of receiving a diagnosis, and the grief that can come with finally being believed

  • A guided practice on working with resistance: A short exercise from Vidyamala using a clenched fist, to explore the difference between raw discomfort and the resistance we add on top of it.

  • Rediscovering play and joy: Miranda's account of losing, and rediscovering, her sense of play and joy, and why she now treats joy as something she has to look for daily rather than wait for

  • A Q&A on guilt and boundaries: including Miranda's approach to saying no without over-explaining herself

  • Reflections on self-compassion as the antidote to guilt, and boundary-setting as an act of love rather than selfishness

Is This Event For Me?

This workshop is open to everyone, including those new to mindfulness. This recording will resonate with anyone living with chronic pain, illness or long-term health conditions, or supporting someone who is.

Mindfulness teachers may also find elements of this session useful for CPD, particularly the short guided practice on working with resistance, and the discussion of acceptance versus resignation.

What People Said

"Perfectly pitched to the audience. Loved the vulnerability and stories told. I felt like they were people who understood me which I haven't come across before."

"They both shared so much of their personal experiences, and that made it all the more relatable. So much of what they said was identical to my own feelings and reactions, so hearing them describe these things made me feel more normal. A lot of it is stuff that 'healthy' people just don't get, even if they are sympathetic, so it is really important to have these safe spaces to discuss the impact of poor health."
