Breathworks Teacher and artist Clare Barton-Harvey is back again with another of her popular drawing and mindfulness workshops.

This longer day session will allow time for exploration and expression as you explore the relationship between drawing and mindfulness.

You will be guided in a series of simple and playful drawing exercises, focussing on the qualities of openness, curiosity, connection and responsiveness to your materials and subject matter.

The session will help you to access your own creativity and imagination through developing your drawings with an awareness of colour, composition as well as freedom of non-judgement.

During the session there’ll be an introduction to the themes, guided mindfulness and drawing practices, discussion and sharing. The day will be well-paced with breaks throughout.

You will leave with a toolkit of mindful drawing exercises for you to take away and practice again.

What you will need:

  • 10-15 pieces of paper - preferably A3 size ( any size will do)
  • Any drawing materials you would like to use, for example charcoal, watercolour, coloured pastels, oil pastels, ink or brush. Colours are recommended. Clare will demonstrate with graphite pencils, soft chalk pastels and ink
  • Pencil sharpener & eraser (if using pencils)

What you will learn

  • Learn a range of simple and playful drawing approaches for accessing your creativity & imagination
  • Identify a range of key mindfulness themes that support creativity
  • Explore a toolkit of ways to release the judging mind and access an inner freedom when engaging in creative practice
  • Engage simple methods for making interesting compositions, using colour, shape and line
  • Learn about a range of artists work, to inspire your own work

Clare Barton-Harvey

Clare is a full-time artist, tutor, freelance art and mindfulness teacher, trainer and mentor. She has been practising mindfulness meditation for over 30 years and trained with Breathworks mindfulness teacher training in 2006.

In 2003, she studied drawing, to MA level, at the Royal Drawing School and since then has devised numerous workshops, courses and retreats exploring the relationship of drawing, mindfulness, creativity and the imagination. As a freelance drawing and mindfulness teacher and trainer, Clare has worked in a variety of locations including the Royal Drawing School, National Gallery, British Museum, British Library and Pallant House Gallery.

Her artwork draws inspiration from a range of sources including the forest, meditation, Buddhist philosophy and the science of mind. She works with natural pigments and materials, which is integral to the vision of human ecology that she explores in her work. Her work is based on the view that if one enters deeply enough into one’s ‘experience’, then one finds the ‘universal’.

Clare is fascinated by the relationship of art and mindfulness and how they can offer new ways of seeing, feeling and thinking, which can lead to a more enriched experience of the present moment and give us access to innate creativity, wisdom and compassion.
